What is Valtrex (valacyclovir)?

Valtrex (val treks) is an antiviral drug. It is used for the treatment of cold sores and genital herpes caused by the herpes simplex virus and for the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles) and chickenpox caused by the varicella-zoster virus.

Who can take Valtrex (valacyclovir)?

Valtrex is approved for use in adults 18 years of age and older. It is also used to treat cold sores in children 12 years of age and older. This medicine can also treat chickenpox in children 2-18 years of age. Please check with your child’s doctor for medical advice about the correct Valtrex dose in children.
