Valtrex (valacyclovir) tips from pharmacists

  • Valtrex works best if you take it at the first sign of an outbreak. If you have recurrent herpes outbreaks, it might help to have a prescription available at your local pharmacy or a course of the medication available at home.

  • While Valtrex can reduce the transmission of genital herpes, it does not eliminate the risk completely, so you should still use protection such as condoms.

  • To protect against kidney damage, stay well hydrated while taking Valtrex.

  • An oral suspension can be prepared from the tablet. You should store the prepared oral suspension in the refrigerator and discard it after 28 days.
