How should I take Viagra (sildenafil)?

Take Viagra as directed by your healthcare professionals (physician and/or pharmacist). This medicine is to be taken orally (by mouth) with water one hour before planned sexual intercourse. You should take Viagra on an empty stomach or 2 hours after a meal. Taking Viagra with food can impact its effectiveness.

Follow the directions on your prescription label for the Viagra dosage and frequency. Take the medicine as needed before sex. Do not take more Viagra or take it more frequently than prescribed.

Missed dose: Since Viagra is taken as needed to achieve an erection for sex, you are not likely to miss a dose. However, keep in mind that the medicine needs 30-60 minutes to kick in, so if you forget to take it at the recommended time (1 hour before sex), you’ll have to wait for the medicine to work. Do not take two Viagra doses together. Viagra effects usually last about 4 hours.

Storage: Store Viagra at room temperature (between 15-30 C or 59-86 F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep Viagra out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any unused Viagra after the expiration date. You should dispose of Viagra so that children, pets, and others cannot get to the tablets. Do not flush the tablets down the toilet. The best way to dispose of unneeded or expired Viagra is through a medicine take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
