How To Use Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 comes in the form of a tablet, capsule, gel capsule, chewable gel (gummy), and liquid drops. It is usually taken 1-2 times a day, depending on your age, the type of preparation, and the condition being treated.

Vitamin D supplements are available over-the-counter without a doctor’s prescription. However, you should check with your doctor how much vitamin D you need before starting vitamin D supplementation. Certain foods like fatty fish, fish liver oils, and beef liver are natural sources of vitamin D. Eating these foods can help you achieve a higher vitamin D status without taking supplements. Adequate sun exposure can also ensure higher vitamin D levels.

If you are taking vitamin D supplementation, read the package instructions or prescription label carefully. Do not take more vitamin D than directed.

Use a medication dropper to measure the dose of liquid vitamin D. You can add the liquid drops to food or drinks.

Take your vitamin D at around the same time every day. Vitamin D absorption is enhanced by the presence of fat, so it’s helpful to take your vitamin D supplement with a meal that includes high-fat foods.

Many multivitamins and combination products contain supplemental and active forms of vitamin D along with other vitamins. If you are taking more than one supplement, check the labels to ensure you do not exceed the maximum daily intake.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of your oral vitamin D supplement, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra vitamin D to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store vitamin D between 15-30° C or 59-86° F (room temperature) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in bathroom cabinets where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach from children and pets.

Unused medicine: Dispose unused vitamin D3 in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw vitamin D3 in the trash or toilet. The safest way to dispose of expired or unneeded vitamin D is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
