Directions

How should I take Zanaflex (tizanidine)?

Take Zanaflex as directed by your doctor and/or pharmacist. This medicine is to be taken orally (by mouth) with water, two to three times a day. You can take it with or without food, but you should be consistent in this. Follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct Zanaflex dosage and frequency. Do not take more medicine or take it more frequently than prescribed.

Tizanidine (Zanaflex) capsules can be opened so the contents are sprinkled on food such as applesauce. You should talk to your pharmacist or healthcare provider before doing this, however. The effects of Zanaflex are different when used like this compared to swallowing the capsule whole. Also, Zanaflex is absorbed differently when you take tablets vs. pressure-lowering capsules. Therefore, you should not substitute one product (tablet or capsule) for another.

Zanaflex can relieve symptoms of muscle spasticity and rigidity but will not treat the underlying condition. Do not stop taking this medication even if you feel well, without talking to your doctor first. Stopping Zanaflex abruptly can lead to withdrawal symptoms like high blood pressure, fast heartbeat, and muscle tightness. Your doctor will probably reduce your dose gradually if you decide to stop using this medicine.

Missed dose: If you forget to take your dose of Zanaflex, take your medication as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store Zanaflex at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all prescription medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: You should not flush unused or expired Zanaflex down the toilet. Dispose of any unneeded Zanaflex through a medicine take-back program. Ask your local pharmacy for information on how to access such a program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
