Directions

How should I take Zoloft (sertraline)?

Take Zoloft as directed by your physician and/or pharmacist. This medicine is to be taken orally (by mouth) with water. It is usually taken once daily in the morning or evening. Zoloft may be taken every day of the month or only on certain days of the month to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Taking Zoloft with food helps with its absorption and can lower the risk of side effects such as diarrhea and stomach upset. The oral liquid Zoloft preparation should be mixed with about half a cup of water, lemonade, ginger ale, or orange juice. You should drink the mixture right away. (This mixture can look hazy—this is normal).

Follow the directions on your Zoloft prescription label for the dosage and frequency. Take your medicine regularly at around the same time every day. Do not take more Zoloft or take it more frequently than prescribed. Do not stop Zoloft without talking to your doctor first. Stopping Zoloft cold turkey can cause withdrawal symptoms.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of Zoloft, take the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next Zoloft dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not double up on Zoloft doses to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store Zoloft at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep Zoloft out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any unused Zoloft after the expiration date. Learn more about proper medication disposal
