What is Zoloft (sertraline) used for?

Zoloft is a prescription antidepressant that is used to treat mental health conditions including major depressive disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

How does Zoloft (sertraline) work?

Serotonin is a chemical in the human brain that plays an important role in mood regulation. Zoloft is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), meaning it prevents the reuptake of serotonin in the brain. By doing so, Zoloft increases the level of serotonin in the brain. This mechanism makes Zoloft very effective in treating mental health conditions such as major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders like obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorders, panic disorder, and others.

What are Zoloft (sertraline) doses?

Zoloft is available in tablet and oral solution formulations. Common Zoloft doses are 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg. The 60-mL bottle of oral Zoloft solution contains 20 mg/mL of the medicine.
The typical starting dose of Zoloft is 25 mg or 50 mg by mouth once a day.
