How should I take Singulair (montelukast)?

Take Singulair as directed by your physician and/or pharmacist. This medicine is to be taken orally (by mouth) with water. You can take Singulair tablets with or without food in the evening.

Singulair granules can be put directly into the mouth or mixed with a spoonful of soft food such as applesauce at room temperature or cold; the mixture should be consumed immediately after mixing, you should not save it for later use. The packet should not be opened until you are ready to use it.

For asthma, doctors and pharmacists recommend taking the Singulair dose in the evening. For breathing difficulties during exercise, take Singulair 2 hours before exercising.

Follow the directions on your prescription label for the Singulair dosage and frequency. Take your medicine regularly at around the same time every day. Do not take more Singulair or take it more frequently than prescribed. You should continue taking Singulair even if your asthma is under control. Do not stop Singulair without talking to your doctor first.

Singulair is indicated to be used in both adults and pediatric patients. Singulair may be given to patients aged 6 months and older for year-round allergies, 2 years and older for seasonal allergies. For the prevention and treatment of chronic asthma, Singulair can be used in children who are at least 12 months and older. Singulair can be used in children who are at least 6 years and older for exercise-induced asthma. Speak with your child’s pediatrician regarding special care and precautions while using Singulair in your child.

When using Singulair granules in an infant or small child, use the full dose after opening the packet. You can mix the granules with breast milk, baby formula, or food. However, the medicine must be administered within 15 minutes. An opened packet of Singulair oral granules should not be stored for later use. You should discard any unused mixture of the granules and food.

For the liquid form of lisinopril, please use a medicine cup or oral syringe. Ask your pharmacist if you need either one of those devices. Shake the solution well before using it.

Missed dose:  If you forget to take a dose of Singulair, take the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for your next Singulair dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not double up Singulair doses. Do not take more than one dose in a 24-hour period.

Storage: Store Singulair at room temperature (between 15-30 C or 59-86 F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep Singulair out of reach of children.

Unused medicine: Throw away any unused Singulair after the expiration date. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
