How To Use Promethazine

Take promethazine exactly as directed by your physician or pharmacist. Take the promethazine hydrochloride tablet or syrup orally (by mouth). If you are using promethazine liquid, use a dose measuring cup or spoon to measure the dose rather than a household spoon. Follow the directions on the prescription label carefully. Do not take more or less than the dose mentioned on the promethazine labeling or take the medicine more or less frequently than prescribed.

Use the promethazine suppository rectally. Do not swallow the suppository or insert it into any other part of your body. If the promethazine suppository feels soft before removing the wrapper, hold it under cold water for a minute. Dip the tip of the suppository in water. If you are right handed, lie down on your left side and raise your right knee to your chest. Gently insert the suppository into your rectum about 1 inch. Hold it in place for a few seconds. Remain lying down for 15 minutes, then get up and wash your hands before resuming normal activities.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of promethazine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose as scheduled. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store promethazine suppositories in the refrigerator. Store promethazine tablets and liquid at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store promethazine in the bathroom where it can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused promethazine tablets, syrup, or suppositories should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot consume them. Do not flush promethazine down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded promethazine is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
