What is Cozaar (losartan) used for?

Cozaar is a prescription drug used to lower blood pressure in people with hypertension. By keeping blood pressure under control, this medication can help prevent heart attack, stroke, and kidney problems. Cozaar also protects the kidneys against damage due to diabetes. In addition, this medicine can lower the risk of stroke in patients with high blood pressure or an enlarged heart.

How does Cozaar (losartan) work?

Cozaar blocks a chemical called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II makes blood vessels tighter or narrower. When this chemical is blocked by Cozaar, the blood vessels become relaxed or wider, which brings the blood pressure down.

What is the dosage of Cozaar (losartan)?

Cozaar is available in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg tablets. Doctors usually prescribe Cozaar 50 mg by mouth once a day. However, your doctor may start you on a low dose and gradually increase depending on your response to the medication.
