What are the pros and cons of Lorazepam (Ativan)?

  • It can be used safely in combination with other antidepressants
  • Generic lorazepam tablets are available at a very reasonable price
  • Typically works well to treat anxiety short-term
  • Oral solution available for adults and children with problems swallowing
  • Injection form available for quick onset of action, especially for seizures
  • Do not have extensive drug interactions

  • Can cause drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, and memory problems 
  • Not a safe choice for people with breathing problems such as sleep apnea, asthma, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • It can be habit-forming, leading to dependence and addiction. Long-term use (more than 4 months) is not typically recommended.
  • Risk of dependence and misuse that may require higher doses over time
  • Not safe for people with narrow-angle glaucoma
  • Can cause severe or even life-threatening withdrawal symptoms if discontinued suddenly after long-term use
