What is prednisone?

Prednisone (pred nuh zone) is a corticosteroid medication used to treat a wide range of conditions in different organ systems of the body. It is a prescription medication taken orally (by mouth) to replace steroids naturally produced in the body in people with low corticosteroid levels. It is also used in people with normal corticosteroid levels to treat conditions in which there is inflammation (swelling, redness, irritation) and to change the way the immune system works.

There may be other uses of this medication - your pharmacist or doctor can give you further prednisone information.

Who can take prednisone?

Prednisone is approved for use in children and adults. The dosing in children under 12 years of age is based on body weight.
