How To Use Trazodone

Take trazodone exactly as directed by your doctor. This medicine is to be taken by mouth with water with a light meal or snack. Swallow the tablet whole or break it at the score mark. Taking your medication at around the same times every day makes it easier to remember.

Follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct dosage and frequency. Do not take a higher or lower dose of trazodone or take it more or less frequently than prescribed.

It can take 1-4 weeks for you to get the full benefits of trazodone. Your doctor may increase your dose after 3-4 days. Once your depression is controlled, your doctor may decrease the dose.

Trazodone will help control your depression but will not cure your condition. Do not stop trazodone even if you feel well without talking to your healthcare professional first. Stopping trazodone abruptly can cause withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, headache, irritability, agitation, anxiety, sleep problems, tingling, and sweating. To help you come off trazodone, your doctor will tell you how to decrease the dose gradually.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of trazodone, take the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

Storage: Store trazodone at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any expired or unused trazodone. Do not flush the medicine down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medicines is through your local waste disposal company or a medication take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
