Amantadine Tips from Pharmacists

  • If you are taking the oral syrup of amantadine, use the dose measuring spoon or syringe provided with the medicine to measure the dose. Do not use a regular household spoon because this can lead to wrong dosing.

  • The extended-release capsules of amantadine (Gocovri) should be taken once a day at bedtime with or without food. If you have trouble swallowing pills, you can open the capsule and sprinkle the contents on some applesauce or soft food. Consume the mixture right away. Swallow it without chewing.

  • The extended-release tablets of amantadine (Osmolex ER) should be taken once a day in the morning with or without food. Do not cut, crush, chew, or split the ER tablets.

  • Amantadine can make you fall asleep suddenly and cause dizziness, lightheadedness, and drowsiness. Do not drive or do anything that requires your full concentration until you know how this medicine affects you.

  • Stand up slowly from sitting or lying positions to lower your risk of falls due to lightheadedness while on amantadine.
