Uses

What is famotidine (Pepcid AC) used for?

Famotidine is an H2 blocker. It reduces the amount of acid made by the stomach. Prescription famotidine is used to treat intestinal and gastric ulcers; gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD); and hypersecretory conditions in which the stomach produces too much acid, for example, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Over-the-counter famotidine is used to prevent and treat heartburn (sour stomach and acid indigestion) caused by eating or drinking certain foods and drinks.

How does famotidine (Pepcid AC) work?

Famotidine is an H2 blocker. It works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

What are famotidine (Pepcid AC) doses?

Famotidine (Pepcid AC) is available as 10 mg, 20 mg, and 40 mg tablets and an oral solution that contains 40 mg/5 mL.

The typical dose of famotidine for an active bleeding ulcer, symptomatic GERD, and erosive esophagitis is 20 mg once daily or 40 mg every other day. This is the recommended maximum daily dose in adults and children who weigh over 40 kilograms. A lower dose of 20 mg every other day may be prescribed to patients with kidney problems.
