What are the pros and cons of fenofibrate?

  • You only need to take fenofibrate once a day.
  • Some forms of fenofibrate can be taken with or without food.
  • Fenofibrate is available in generic form (generic drugs are typically lower cost than the brand name versions).

  • Fenofibrate alone will not lower cholesterol. You need to eat a proper diet and exercise regularly as well.
  • Some forms of this medication cannot be taken while breastfeeding.
  • Fenofibrate can cause serious problems, especially in people with pre-existing liver disease or kidney disease. 
  • Taking fenofibrate increases your risk of muscle damage, especially if you’re also taking other cholesterol-lowering medicines called statins.
