Dextromethorphan-Guaifenesin Tips from Pharmacists

  • Guaifenesin is an expectorant and works by thinning mucus to help clear the air passages. For best results, drink extra fluids while taking this medicine.

  • Do not cut, crush, or chew the extended-release tablets.

  • Use the dosing syringe provided to measure liquid medicine.

  • Some products of dextromethorphan and guaifenesin, such as dissolvable granules, may not be safe for people with phenylketonuria. If you have PKU, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you’re unsure about a product’s safety.

  • Check the labels of all the cold and cough remedies you are taking to ensure you do not exceed the maximum daily dose.

  • If your cough does not improve in a week’s time or keeps coming back, call your doctor.
