Hydroxychloroquine Side Effects

Some of the common side effects of hydroxychloroquine are listed below. Tell your doctor if these side effects are severe or do not go away over time.

  • Headache
  • Dizziness 
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Rash

Some of the adverse effects of hydroxychloroquine are more serious and require immediate medical attention. Call your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical help if you have the following signs and symptoms:

  • Difficulty reading or seeing
  • Visual changes like flashes, streaks, or blurred vision
  • Hearing problems, ringing in the ears
  • Muscle weakness
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Drowsiness
  • Convulsions
  • Mood changes
  • Bleached hair or hair loss
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Suicidal thoughts

The above list may not include all the potential adverse effects of hydroxychloroquine. Tell your doctor if you have severe side effects or if your symptoms do not improve over time. You can also report unusual side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Hydroxychloroquine Overdose:  In case of a known or suspected overdose of hydroxychloroquine, call your doctor immediately or call the national poison control helpline at 1-800-222-1222. If a person has collapsed, had a seizure, has trouble breathing, or cannot be awakened, call 911 immediately. Signs and symptoms of a hydroxychloroquine overdose may include headache, drowsiness, vision changes, irregular heartbeat, and convulsions. 

NOTE: Lisinopril is a prescription medicine - never share your lisinopril with others or use someone else’s lisinopril.
