How To Use Phenazopyridine

Phenazopyridine tablets or capsules are to be taken by mouth with water. This medication is usually taken 3 times a day after meals. Swallow the tablets whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush or chew the tablets - the dye in this medicine can stain your teeth. Stop taking phenazopyridine when the pain and discomfort from your urinary tract infection are gone. Do not take phenazopyridine for more than 2 days without talking to a healthcare professional.

If you are taking prescription phenazopyridine, follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct dosage and frequency. Take your medicine regularly at around the same time every day. Do not take a higher or lower dose than prescribed, and do not take the medication more or less frequently than prescribed.

You should know that phenazopyridine will only provide urinary pain relief. It will not cure your urinary tract infection. Contact your health care professional if your symptoms do not go away after a few days. Do not continue taking phenazopyridine for more than 2 days without your doctor’s advice.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of phenazopyridine, take the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next scheduled dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store in a tightly closed container at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any expired or unused phenazopyridine. Do not flush the medicine down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medicines is through your local waste disposal company or a medication take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
