Phenytoin Tips from Pharmacists

  • Your doctor will start you on a low dose of phenytoin and increase the dose gradually. Follow the dosing instructions carefully and take the medicine exactly as prescribed.

  • Swallow the extended phenytoin sodium capsules whole. Do not cut, crush, or chew them.

  • Shake the bottle of phenytoin oral suspension well before use. Use the oral dosing syringe supplied to measure the dose.

  • Do not stop taking phenytoin abruptly. This can lead to worsening seizure control. Your doctor will tell you how to lower the dose slowly.

  • Phenytoin can cause dizziness and drowsiness. Do not drive or perform other hazardous activities until you know how this medicine affects you.

  • Alcohol can make side effects like dizziness worse and affect phenytoin concentrations. Avoid drinking while on this medicine.

  • Tell your doctor immediately if you develop any unusual changes in mood or behavior or suicidal thoughts or behavior while on this medication.
