Potassium Chloride Side Effects

Possible side effects of potassium chloride are listed below. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects if they are severe or do not go away in a few days.

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Abdominal pain

Some of the adverse effects of potassium chloride are more serious. Call your doctor right away or seek emergency medical help if you develop signs and symptoms such as:

  • Skin rash, hives, itching (allergic reaction)
  • Listlessness
  • Mental confusion
  • Trouble swallowing or breathing
  • Tingling, burning, prickling, tight or pulling sensations in arms, hands, legs, or feet
  • Heaviness or weakness in legs
  • Gray, cold or pale skin
  • Severe throat irritation
  • Severe stomach pain or stomach bloating
  • Severe diarrhea
  • Severe vomiting or coffee grounds in vomit
  • Black stools

Potassium chloride Overdose: In case of an overdose, call your doctor immediately. You can also call the National Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If someone has lost consciousness, collapsed, is not breathing, or has had a seizure, call 911. Overdose symptoms and signs may include electrocardiographic changes, muscle paralysis, and cardiac arrest.
