  • Propranolol is a first-choice drug to protect the heart after a heart attack, prevent chest pain (angina), and treat atrial fibrillation.
  • It can also effectively control essential tremors and prevent migraine headaches. If you have multiple health conditions that can be treated with propranolol, you may only need to take one medication for them.
  • You only need to take the extended-release (long-acting) formulations of propranolol once a day.
  • Propranolol is available in a lower-cost generic version.

  • Propranolol is not the first-choice drug to treat high blood pressure.
  • It may not be suitable for people with lung conditions such as asthma or heart conditions such as sinus bradycardia, sick sinus syndrome, and second or third-degree heart block.
  • This medication can mask symptoms of low blood sugar in people taking medications for diabetes.
  • Abruptly stopping propranolol can cause complications like a sudden rise in blood pressure and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
