Ranolazine (Ranexa) Uses

Ranolazine is used to treat chronic angina (chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart). Chronic angina can occur in patients with coronary heart disease due to the narrowing of the coronary arteries (blood vessels that supply the heart). Ranolazine therapy can be used with other drugs, such as beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, angiotensin receptor blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, nitrates, lipid-lowering drugs, and antiplatelet therapy.

There may be other uses of ranolazine—your doctor or pharmacist can give you further drug information.

Ranolazine (Ranexa) Mechanism of Action

It is unclear how ranolazine has anti-ischemic effects or anti-anginal efficacy in people with chronic angina. This medication is taken to prevent angina attacks. It does not treat an ongoing angina attack.

Ranolazine (Ranexa) Doses

Ranolazine extended-release tablets come in strengths of 500 mg and 1000 mg. This is a long-acting, film-coated tablet. The granules come in sachets of 500 mg and 1000 mg.

The usual dose of ranolazine is 500 mg twice a day. This can be increased to 1000 mg twice a day, if needed.
