Sumatriptan Succinate (Imitrex) Tips from Pharmacists

  • If your migraine symptoms get better but come back after one dose of sumatriptan, you can repeat a dose after at least 2 hours have passed. Do not take more than 200 mg of sumatriptan in 24 hours.

  • If you do not get treatment-related decrease in severe pain after one dose of sumatriptan, do not take a second dose. Your pain may be from something other than migraine headache.

  • Sumatriptan can lead to an increase in blood pressure. Monitor your blood pressure and tell your doctor if you notice it is higher than usual after starting this medicine.

  • Sumatriptan can interact with other medications, particularly antidepressants, and increase your risk of a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you take an antidepressant before starting on this headache medicine.
