Uses

Telmisartan (Micardis) Uses

Telmisartan is used for lowering blood pressure in people with high blood pressure. It is also used for cardiovascular risk reduction in people 55 years of age and older who are at risk of heart attack, stroke, and death.

There may be other uses of telmisartan, such as to treat heart failure or diabetic nephropathy—your doctor or pharmacist can give you further drug information.

Telmisartan (Micardis) Mechanism of Action

Telmisartan acts on the renin angiotensin system. It blocks the action of angiotensin, a natural substance in the body that causes tightening of the blood vessels. By blocking angiotensin, telmisartan helps to make blood flow smoother, lowers blood pressure, and helps the heart pump blood more efficiently.

Telmisartan (Micardis) Doses

Telmisartan is available as 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg tablets.

For lowering blood pressure, the usual starting dose of telmisartan is 40 mg per day. The maintenance dose ranges between 20 mg and 80 mg per day, based on blood pressure response. Much of telmisartan’s antihypertensive effect is seen within 2 weeks. The maximum blood pressure reduction occurs after 4 weeks.
