How To Use Zonisamide (Zonegran)
Zonisamide comes in the form of oral capsules or liquid suspension to take by mouth once or twice a day as prescribed. Try to take your medicine at around the same time(s) every day. Swallow zonisamide capsules whole - do not cut, crush, or chew them. Use a dose-measuring cup or syringe to measure liquid zonisamide. You can take this medicine with or without food.
Read the prescription label and follow your doctor’s dosing instructions carefully. Your doctor will start you on a lower dose of zonisamide and adjust the dose every 14 days, as needed until you are on a stable dose of zonisamide to control seizures. Do not increase or decrease the dose of zonisamide or change the dosing frequency without talking to your doctor first.
Zonisamide can help to control your seizures but will not cure the underlying condition. It can take 2 weeks for you to get the full benefit of this medicine.
Do not stop taking zonisamide suddenly without talking to your doctor, even if your seizures are well controlled. Tell your doctor if you notice any unusual changes in mood or behavior while on zonisamide. Stopping zonisamide abruptly can result in worsening seizure control. Your doctor will tell you how to slowly reduce the dose of zonisamide, and switch you to other seizure medicines if needed.
Missed dose: If you miss a dose of zonisamide, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for the last dose.
Storage: Store zonisamide at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in the original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets. Discard unused zonisamide suspension 30 days after opening the bottle.
Unused medicine: Unused zonisamide should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw zonisamide in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded zonisamide is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
