Directions

How should I take citalopram (Celexa)?

Take citalopram as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. This medicine is to be taken orally (by mouth) once a day in the morning or evening. You can take it with or without food.

Follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct citalopram dosage and frequency. Take your medicine regularly at around the same time every day. Do not take more than the maximum recommended dose. Do not take citalopram more or less frequently than prescribed.

It can take 1-4 weeks for you to feel the full effects of citalopram. This medicine will control your symptoms but will not cure the condition. Continue taking citalopram even if you feel well. Do not stop taking this medication without talking to your doctor first. Suddenly stopping citalopram can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as depression, mood changes, abnormal excitement, anxiety, irritability, agitation, confusion, headaches, dizziness, numbness, tingling, unusual dreams, sleep difficulties, sweating, and nausea. Your doctor will reduce your dose gradually if you wish to stop citalopram therapy. Tell your doctor if you experience any symptoms after decreasing your citalopram dose.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of citalopram, take the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store citalopram at room temperature (between 15-30º C or 59-86º F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any expired or unused citalopram. Do not flush the medicine down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medicines is through a medication take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
