What is citalopram (Celexa) used for?

Citalopram is a prescription medication that is used for treating depression. There may be other uses of this medicine, such as to treat panic disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, social phobia, binge eating disorder, and alcoholism. How does citalopram (Celexa) work?

Citalopram works by boosting the levels of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a natural substance that elevates mood and helps maintain mental balance.

What are citalopram (Celexa) doses?

Citalopram is available in the following doses:

Oral tablet strength:  10 mg | 20 mg | 40 mg 
Oral liquid strength: 10 mg/5 mL 

The usual starting dose of citalopram is 20 mg once a day. Your doctor may increase your dose gradually. The maximum dose of citalopram is 40 mg a day.
