Dicyclomine Uses

Dicyclomine is an antispasmodic agent and it is used to treat functional bowel or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

There may be other uses of dicyclomine—your pharmacist or doctor can give you further drug information.

Dicyclomine Mechanism of Action

Dicyclomine works by blocking the action of a natural substance in the body called acetylcholine. Through this anticholinergic action, it helps to relax the smooth muscles in the digestive tract (stomach and intestines). It also slows down the natural movements of the gut. This helps to reduce the cramping and other bowel symptoms experienced by people with irritable bowel syndrome.

Dicyclomine Doses

Dicyclomine is available as a 10 mg capsule, 20 mg tablet, 10 mg/5 mL syrup, and 20 mg/2 mL (10 mg/mL) injection solution.

The usual initial dose of dicyclomine in adults is 20 mg four times a day by mouth. After one week of treatment, the dose may be increased to 40 mg four times a day by mouth.
