Doxazosin (Cardura) Tips from Pharmacists

  • You can take the regular (immediate-release) doxazosin tablets in the morning or evening, with or without food. You should take the extended-release tablets in the morning with breakfast.

  • It can take several weeks for doxazosin to have its full effect. Continue taking the medicine even if your symptoms of BPH are controlled. Monitor blood pressure and take a log of your readings to your healthcare appointments.

  • Doxazosin can lower blood pressure and make you feel dizzy and lightheaded. Stand up slowly from a sitting or lying position, especially when you start the medicine and after the dose increases. Contact your doctor for medical advice about side effects if severe dizziness continues. Your doctor may adjust the dose.

  • Stop taking doxazosin and call your doctor without delay if you develop new or worsening chest pain.

  • Get emergency medical help if you develop a painful or prolonged erection.
