Ferrous Sulfate (FEOSOL) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Give your healthcare provider a complete list of your medications before starting an iron supplement. Many supplements contain iron and taking multiple products could lead to an overdose.

  • Taking Feosol Original iron supplement after meals can reduce gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, stomach pain, and diarrhea.

  • Do not crush, chew, or split the extended release or delayed release (film coated) tablets.

  • If you are taking the liquid elixir, mixing it with water or fruit juice may prevent staining of your teeth. However, do not mix liquid ferrous sulfate with milk or wine.

  • Use a medication dropper to measure the dose of liquid iron supplement. You can mix the iron drops with water, fruit juice, formula, or breast milk.

  • The dosage of iron supplements in children depends on body weight. Do not give ferrous sulfate 325 mg to children without consulting a healthcare provider. Your provider will tell you the right iron supplement for your child.
