What are the pros and cons of Flagyl?

  • Flagyl can effectively treat a variety of bacterial and parasitic infections.
  • It is available in a low-cost generic formulation.
  • This medication is generally well tolerated with mild side effects.
  • You can take Flagyl with or without food (the extended-release formulation should be taken away from meals, however).
  • You can administer Flagyl (metronidazole) in various ways (oral, intravenous, topical, and vaginal).

  • Drinking alcohol while taking Flagyl can cause severe adverse effects. You should avoid alcohol during treatment and for 3 days afterward.
  • Long-term use of Flagyl (metronidazole) can lead to nerve damage, seizures, and an increased risk of cancer.
  • Flagyl can cause a sharp, unpleasant metallic taste in the mouth.
  • This medication is not safe for use by pregnant women in the first trimester.
