Directions

How should I take Keflex?

Take this medication exactly as prescribed. Follow all directions on the prescription label and any medication guides if provided. Do not use it more or less frequently than your doctor’s instructions.

You should start feeling better after the first few days of taking cephalexin or Keflex. Call your doctor for medical advice if your symptoms do not improve or worsen.

Finish the whole course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if you feel better. Skipping doses or stopping antibiotics early increases the risk of developing antibiotic-resistant organisms.

Do not take Keflex to treat infections without medical tests and examinations by your healthcare provider. Keflex is ineffective against viral infections such as the flu or common cold.

Do not share Keflex with other people even though they may have the same symptoms as you.

If you use the liquid form, shake the liquid well before each use to mix the medication evenly. After mixing, Keflex oral suspension can be stored in the refrigerator for 14 days.

You should measure liquid medicine carefully using the dosing syringe or a medicine-dose measuring device. Household items such as kitchen spoons may not give you an accurate amount of medication.

Inform your healthcare providers and the laboratory personnel that you take Keflex as this medicine can affect the results of certain medical tests such as the Direct Coombs (a test used to detect antibodies attached to red blood cells) and urine glucose tests

Missed dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the amount or take more than prescribed to make up for the missed dose. Let your doctor know immediately if you have missed more than one dose or are unsure about what to do.

Storage: Keep the medication in its original container; keep it tightly closed, out of reach of children, pets, and other people. Like any other prescription medication, Keflex should not be shared with anyone. Many people store their medications in the bathroom; this is not recommended due to moisture and heat. After mixing, store the oral liquid suspension in the refrigerator for 14 days; discard the medicine after 14 days.

Unused medicine: Like other prescription medications, do not consume Keflex after the expiration date. Discard the refrigerated oral suspension after 14 days. This prescription drug is intended for your use only. Unneeded medicines should be disposed of appropriately to prevent children, pets, and other people from getting to them. Your local pharmacy can provide information about medication drug take-back programs. You can also learn more about proper medication disposal.
