Side Effects

What are latanoprost (Xalatan) side effects?

Common side effects of latanoprost are listed below. Tell your doctor if these side effects are severe or do not go away after a few days.

  • Temporary eye pain, redness, stinging, burning, itching, swelling, or watering
  • Grittiness (feeling like something is in your eye)
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye discharge (lid crusting or sleepers)
  • Eye inflammation

Latanoprost can increase the amount of brown pigment in your eye and change your eye color to brown. This change is often more noticeable in people who have brown eyes. Using latanoprost can also make your eyelashes longer, thicker, and darker. While these changes occur slowly, they can be permanent. If you use the eye drops in only one eye, the changes will occur in that eye, possibly leading to a difference between your eyes. Tell your healthcare professional if you notice these changes in eye color.

The above list may not include all the potential adverse effects of latanoprost. Tell your healthcare provider immediately if you have any severe or unusual side effects or your symptoms are worsening. You can also report unusual side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088

Latanoprost overdose: In case of an intentional or accidental overdose of latanoprost, contact your doctor immediately. You can also call your local poison control center or the national poison helpline at 1-800-222-1222.
