Side Effects


Levetiracetam (Keppra) Side Effects

Possible side effects of levetiracetam are listed below. Call your doctor if they are severe or persist after a few days.

  • Weakness
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Unsteadiness
  • Confusion
  • Mood changes such as irritability or aggression
  • Gastrointestinal side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, constipation
  • Double vision
  • Nasal congestion
  • Joint pain
  • Neck pain

Rarely, levetiracetam can also cause a more serious adverse reaction. Call your doctor right away or seek emergency medical attention if you develop the following signs and symptoms:

  • Worsening seizure control
  • Seizures that are different from before
  • Fever, sore throat, and other signs of infection
  • Skin rash, blisters, hives, itching
  • Swelling of the face, eyes, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Trouble breathing or swallowing
  • Loss of balance or coordination

The above list may not include all the potential side effects of levetiracetam. Contact your healthcare provider if your side effects are unusual or severe or do not get better over time. You can also report unusual side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Levetiracetam Overdose: In case of an overdose of levetiracetam, call your doctor immediately. You can also call your local poison control center, provincial poison control center, or the national poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Call 911 or emergency services if a person has collapsed, cannot breathe, has had a seizure, or cannot be awakened. Signs and symptoms of an overdose may include drowsiness, agitation, aggression, difficulty breathing, and loss of consciousness (coma).
