How To Use Levofloxacin

Levofloxacin comes in the form of an oral tablet and oral solution to take by mouth once daily. Try to take your medicine at around the same time every day. You can take the tablet without regard to meals, but you should take the oral solution at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating.

Read the prescription label carefully and take levofloxacin exactly as prescribed. Do not change the dose, dosing frequency, or treatment duration without your doctor’s approval. The dose and number of days for which you need to take levofloxacin depends on the infection being treated.

You will likely start to feel better after being on levofloxacin for a few days. Finish the prescribed course of antibiotics even if you are symptom-free. Do not stop levofloxacin unless your doctor tells you. Skipping doses or stopping treatment too soon may prevent your infection from being fully treated and cause it to come back in the future and be harder to treat. Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or get worse after a few days of taking levofloxacin.

Never use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s medicine to treat infections. Remember, antibiotics do not work against viral infections such as the common cold and flu. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases the risk of antibiotic resistance, leading to infections that are difficult to treat with available antibiotics.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of levofloxacin, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store levofloxacin oral at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired levofloxacin should be disposed of in a way that other people, children, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw levofloxacin in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded levofloxacin is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
