Methadone (Dolophine) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Take methadone exactly as prescribed. This medicine is habit-forming and carries a risk of physical dependence and fatal overdose.

  • Do not stop taking methadone suddenly. This can lead to potentially life-threatening withdrawal effects.

  • Do not chew or swallow the dispersible methadone tablets without mixing in water or citrus fruit juice.

  • Use a dose-measuring device to measure liquid medicine. Do not use a household spoon.

  • Methadone can make you drowsy and dizzy. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.

  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about having naloxone (Narcan) available. This medicine can reverse the dangerous effects of an overdose.
