  • This medicine is a controlled drug and can be habit-forming even at prescribed doses. 
  • People who take methadone can develop life-threatening breathing difficulties, especially if combined with other CNS depressants like alcohol, benzodiazepines, sedatives/hypnotics, tranquilizers, and muscle relaxants.
  • Constipation is one of the most common side effects of methadone. You may need to take stool softeners or laxatives while on this drug.
  • Unborn babies can develop a dependence on methadone. Women who take methadone during pregnancy need to carefully monitor the baby for neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome after birth.
