Methimazole Tips from Pharmacists

  • Methimazole can cause nausea, vomiting, and upset stomach. Take the tablets with food to prevent or relieve these stomach issues.

  • It can take several weeks or even months for you to notice an improvement in your hyperthyroidism symptoms. Continue taking methimazole regularly even if you don’t notice any immediate improvement.

  • Tell your doctor if you notice symptoms such as dry skin, weight gain, constipation, cold sensitivity, depression, or tiredness. These can be symptoms of hypothyroidism (low thyroid levels). Your doctor may order thyroid function tests and lower your dose of methimazole if needed.

  • This medicine can affect blood counts. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop unusual bleeding or signs of infection.
