Methimazole Pros and Cons

  • Methimazole can effectively control symptoms of hyperthyroidism. It may be used in people who cannot undergo thyroid surgery.
  • It is less likely to cause liver damage than other antithyroid agents.
  • Methimazole is available in a lower-cost generic version.

  • To get the most benefit, you need to take methimazole three times a day at regular intervals, with the doses 8 hours apart, at least initially. 
  • You need to get regular blood tests while you are on this medicine. 
  • This medication is not safe for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
