Pantoprazole (Protonix) tips from pharmacists

  • Pantoprazole oral tablets should be swallowed whole; do not cut, chew, or crush since it is a delayed-release medication.

  • Pantoprazole is available as an oral suspension for adults and children with problems swallowing.

  • Long-term use of pantoprazole can cause your bones to be weak over time. If you are 50 years or older, you should discuss how to manage the increased risk of osteoporosis with your doctor.

  • Pantoprazole can be taken with or without food.

  • Let your doctor know immediately if you have a fever and severe stomach pain or cramps — these can be signs of a life-threatening bacterial infection.
