How To Use Penicillin V Potassium

Take penicillin V potassium by mouth 2-4 times a day as prescribed. Try to take your medicine at around the same time(s) every day. You can take this medicine with or without food; however, it is better absorbed when you take it on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after meals).

Read the prescription label carefully and take oral penicillin therapy according to your doctor’s dosing instructions. Do not change the dose, dosing frequency, or treatment duration without your doctor’s approval.

Shake the bottle of penicillin V potassium oral liquid well before use. Use a medicine dose-measuring device such as a syringe or cup to measure the liquid medicine. Do not use a household spoon, as this could result in inaccurate dosing.

Finish the prescribed course of antibiotics even if your symptoms are gone. Skipping doses or stopping treatment too soon can result in incomplete treatment of your infection, causing it to come back and be more difficult to treat in the future due to antibiotic resistance. Remember, antibiotic medicines are used to treat a known or strongly suspected bacterial infection only. They cannot treat viral infections, such as the common cold or flu.

Missed dose: If you forget a dose of penicillin V potassium, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store penicillin V potassium tablets at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in their original container, tightly closed. Store the oral solution in the refrigerator and discard any unused medicine after 14 days. Do not freeze the oral solution. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired penicillin V potassium should be disposed of in a way that other people, children, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw penicillin V potassium in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded penicillin V potassium is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
