Phenazopyridine (Pyridium) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Do not take phenazopyridine for more than two days unless your doctor says so. This medicine can mask symptoms of a worsening infection and lead to a delay in its diagnosis and treatment.

  • To avoid stomach upset, take phenazopyridine after meals.

  • Wear a pantyliner to avoid staining your underwear while on this medicine.

  • Avoid wearing soft contact lenses while on phenazopyridine. If you decide to continue wearing contacts, wash your hands well after handling the tablets and before handling soft contact lenses to avoid staining them.

  • Tell lab personnel you are on phenazopyridine before any tests. This medicine can cause color reactions and interfere with the results of urine tests and other lab tests.
