How To Use Risperidone

Risperidone comes in the form of an oral tablet, orally disintegrating tablet, and an oral solution to take by mouth. You should take this medicine once or twice a day as prescribed. You can take risperidone with or without food. Try to take your medication at around the same time(s) every day.

Use a medication dropper or syringe to measure the exact dose of the risperidone oral solution. You can take the oral solution (liquid medicine) with coffee, low-fat milk, orange juice, or water (but do not take it with tea or colas).

If you are using the risperidone orally disintegrating tablet, make sure you open the foil pack with dry hands. Open the pack just before taking the medicine. Immediately place the tablet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve. You can then swallow the medicine with or without water. Do not crush or chew the orally disintegrating tablet.

Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully and use oral risperidone exactly as directed. Do not take a higher or lower dose of this medicine or take it more or less frequently than your doctor prescribes.

Your doctor may start you on a low dose of risperidone and slowly increase the dose. Follow the dosing instructions carefully. Remember that risperidone will help to control your symptoms, but it will not cure your condition. Do not stop taking risperidone without speaking to your healthcare provider first. Abruptly stopping this medicine can lead to withdrawal symptoms and/or make your condition harder to treat.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of risperidone, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store risperidone at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused risperidone should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw risperidone in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded risperidone is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
