How To Use Senna

Senna comes in the form of a tablet, chewable tablet, liquid, granules, or powder to be taken by mouth once or twice a day. Taking senna at bedtime generally produces a bowel movement in 6-12 hours (the next morning). 

Read the package instructions carefully. Do not take senna for more than one week. Long-term use of this product can make you dependent on laxatives and have other harmful effects. If you do not have a bowel movement after taking senna or you have a sudden change in bowel habits, call your doctor.

If you are taking certain senna products like Perdiem Overnight Relief, ExLax Regular, or ExLax Maximum Strength, swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or split the pills. Take these products at least 2 hours away from other medications as they can affect how other medications work.

Missed dose: Senna is usually taken as needed. If you are taking senna regularly and miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store senna at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused senna should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw senna in the trash or flush it down the toilet.
