How To Use Sodium Bicarbonate

Sodium bicarbonate comes in the form of a powder and tablet to take by mouth 1-4 times a day. Read the package label or prescription label carefully. Do not exceed the recommended dose of FDA-approved drug products for excess stomach acid. Take sodium bicarbonate at least 2 hours away from your other medicines.

When you are using sodium bicarbonate as an antacid, take it 1-2 hours after a meal with a full glass of water. For other conditions, you can take the medicine with or without food, but avoid taking it on a very full stomach.

If you are taking sodium bicarbonate powder, measure the dose carefully using a dose-measuring cup. Mix the powder in at least half a glass (120 mL or 4 ounces) of water.

If you do not get relief from your symptoms after 2 weeks of taking sodium bicarbonate, call your doctor.

Missed dose: If you are taking sodium bicarbonate on schedule and miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store sodium bicarbonate at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused sodium bicarbonate should be disposed of in a way that other people, children, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw sodium bicarbonate in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded sodium bicarbonate is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal
