How To Use Timolol

Timolol maleate formulations include an ophthalmic solution and a long-acting gel-forming solution. This medication is usually applied to the eyes once or twice a day at uniformly spaced time intervals. Your doctor may increase the dose of timolol, for example, from 0.25% to 0.5%, if needed. They may decrease the frequency of timolol use from twice a day to once a day based on your response.

Read the prescription label carefully and use timolol exactly as instructed by your doctor. Do not use a higher or lower dose or use this medicine more or less frequently than your doctor tells you.

Before applying timolol, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. If you wear contact lenses, remove them. Shake the bottle of the long-acting gel-forming solution before use. Do not touch the dropper to your eye or skin or anything else. Tilt your head back and pull your lower eyelid down to make a pocket. Squeeze one drop of the medicine into this pocket, close your eye, apply gentle pressure, and tilt your head down for a couple of minutes. Replace the dropper in the bottle. Do not rinse or wash the dropper. Always wash your hands after ophthalmic drug administration to remove any residual medicine. Wait at least 10 minutes before instilling any other eye drops.

Timolol can help to control your condition but will not cure it. Continue using timolol ophthalmic solution even if you don’t have any symptoms. Do not stop using timolol without talking to your healthcare professional.

Missed dose: If you forget to apply a dose of timolol, do it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and apply the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store timolol at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired timolol should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw timolol in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded timolol is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
