Topiramate Side Effects

Possible side effects of topiramate are listed below. Call your doctor for medical advice if they are severe or persist after a few days.

  • Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in the hands or feet
  • Slowed thinking or reactions
  • Drowsiness
  • Headache
  • Nervousness
  • Weakness
  • Uncontrolled eye movements
  • Uncontrolled shaking of any part of the body
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Change in taste
  • Weight loss
  • Nosebleed
  • Dry mouth
  • Back pain, muscle pain, bone pain
  • Missed menstrual periods
  • Excessive bleeding during menstrual periods

Rarely, topiramate can cause more serious adverse effects. Tell your doctor right away or seek emergency medical attention if you develop:

  • Skin rash, blisters, or peeling
  • Eye pain, redness, or vision changes (blurred vision, double vision, loss of vision)
  • Low body temperature or chills 
  • Worsening seizures
  • Problems with concentration
  • Speech problems
  • Memory problems
  • Confusion
  • Loss of coordination
  • Irregular or pounding heartbeat
  • Chest pain
  • Trouble breathing or shortness of breath
  • Fast and shallow breathing
  • Excessive tiredness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Severe back pain or side pain
  • Bloody, cloudy, or foul-smelling urine, increased urinary frequency, difficulty urinating or pain when urinating
  • Fever or other signs of infection
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Loss of consciousness or coma

The above list may not include all the potential side effects of topiramate. Contact your healthcare provider if your side effects are unusual or severe or do not get better over time. You can also report unusual side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Topiramate Overdose: In case of an overdose of topiramate, call your doctor immediately. You can also call your local poison control center or the national poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Call 911 or emergency services if a person has collapsed, cannot breathe, has had a seizure, or cannot be awakened. Overdose symptoms may include seizures, drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness, problems with speech, double vision, blurred vision, stomach pain, loss of appetite, trouble thinking, loss of coordination, agitation, depression, fast and shallow breathing, irregular heartbeat, and loss of consciousness.
