How To Use Valsartan

Valsartan is available as a tablet or liquid to take by mouth. You should swallow tablets whole with water. You can take valsartan with or without food. For lowering blood pressure, valsartan is usually taken once a day. To treat heart failure and after a heart attack, valsartan is usually taken twice a day.

Take your medicine at around the same time every day. This will help you remember to take it.

The oral suspension of valsartan is usually only prescribed to children or adults who cannot swallow pills. Shake the bottle well before use. Use a dose-measuring device such as a cup or syringe to measure the dose accurately. Using a household spoon to measure liquid medicine can result in the wrong dosage.

Read the prescription label carefully and take valsartan exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take a higher or lower dose of this medicine or take it more or less frequently than prescribed.

Do not switch between different valsartan products or brands unless your doctor says so because different products release the medicine differently in the body.

Your doctor may start you on a low dose of valsartan and gradually increase the dose. This medication will help to control hypertension (high blood pressure), but it will not cure the condition. Do not stop taking valsartan without talking to your doctor first, even if you feel well and your blood pressure readings at home are in the normal range.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of valsartan, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store valsartan tablets at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Valsartan oral suspension can be stored for up to 30 days at room temperature or up to 75 days in a refrigerator. You should discard the liquid medicine after this time period. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused valsartan should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw valsartan in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded valsartan is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
