Atovaquone-Proguanil (Malarone) Side Effects
Common side effects of atovaquone-proguanil are listed below. Tell your doctor if these side effects are severe or persistent.
- Nausea
- Stomach pain
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Appetite loss
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Mouth sores
- Cough
Some of the adverse effects of atovaquone-proguanil are more serious and require immediate medical attention. Seek emergency medical care if you develop the following signs and symptoms:
- Severe sunburn
- Shortness of breath
- Skin rash, sores, peeling, blistering, hives, or itching
- Swelling of the face, eyes, lips, tongue, or throat
- Swelling of the arms, hands, lower legs, ankles, or feet
- Hoarseness
- Throat tightness
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Right upper abdominal pain, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine
The above list may not include all the potential adverse effects of atovaquone-proguanil. Tell your doctor if you have severe side effects or if your symptoms do not improve over time. You can also report unusual side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.
Atovaquone-Proguanil (Malarone) Overdose: In case of a known or suspected overdose of atovaquone-proguanil, call your doctor immediately. You can also call the national poison control helpline at 1-800-222-1222. If a person has collapsed, had a seizure, has trouble breathing, or cannot be awakened, call 911 immediately. Signs and symptoms of an atovaquone-proguanil overdose may include headache, unusual tiredness, rash, gray/blue tinge to the lips or skin, shortness of breath, stomach pain, vomiting, canker sores, dry, cracked skin on the palms and soles, or hair loss.
